It sounds a little cliche' to say I am from the "Happy Days" generation, but in retrospect that's just what my teen years were like. After high school I married the sweetheart I had loved since junior high. In a few years we had a daughter, very little money and not much on our minds but having fun. I was in the Navy and flew nearby Europe and the Caribbean. My "squadron-mates" would play nearby with the bar girls, but I stayed specific to my young bride. She was the only girl I had been with and I was too shy to convert that. None the less, I was having fun being a young adult. The free time was intoxicating. But then, young people can be restless and fickle.

Our marriage ended in 1962 after the birth of our second daughter. After the forces I entered the civilian workforce and got pretty lucky. My Ny employer almost immediately transferred me to La as a scheme employer over a large aerospace contract. Hollywood! Cool restaurants and clubs. Beverly Hills and fancy cars. Pretty heady stuff. The cost of living was high but affordable, especially since I wasn't sending any money back home for child support.

By now I had met a estimate of ladies that I spent time with, telling none of them about being married before. It goes without saying any admission of parenthood was out of the question. My ex and our two daughters were living with her parents in the suburban South; I was living in the Hollywood Hills. I was living a large lie. No big deal as long as I stayed too busy to listen to my conscience.

At one point my ex called me and asked if I wanted to have any kind of connection with my daughters. She has since told me (I admittedly don't remember this) I responded with a "no." I was willing to deny the existence of my biological offspring to protect my new found "bachelorhood." Life happened and my first house vanished in California's psychedelic smog. It became easier and easier to forget all about them. I was busy and they were admittedly okay.

Three marriages and four adopted children later, I somehow acquired a conscience and began to rue my past. I told my "current family" about my past and they tried their best to understand how this now-mature, loving father and grandparent, could have written off two children. I didn't have any excuses. Still don't.

I told my gift spouse hundreds of times, that the day would come when I had to face my past and deal with my children. I had long ago fulfilled, that I would not accept any invitation to appear on one of those gruesome Tv talk shows that humiliate people like me. I so wanted a reunion but not on those terms.

I feared their rejection so much. In fact, about twenty-six years ago, my eldest daughter Kari and I made a feeble endeavor at reconciliation, but it did not fare well. She rightly fulfilled, I was a jerk and opted to write me out of her life. Since her reaction was pretty much as I expected, I simply tucked my tail in the middle of my legs and crawled back into my life.

It came nearby Christmas time of 2005 that I located my ex's phone estimate and address on the Internet and called her. I asked her how I might get in touch with my daughters and she speedily responded with photos, facts and encouragement. Just after the holidays I got up the nerve to call Kari's home. She and her house were at their youngest daughter's (my granddaughter's) basketball game. No answer.

In less than an hour she called me! I could hear the skepticism in her voice. We talked for three hours. I didn't endeavor to construe away anything...I merely wanted to let her know I wanted a connection with her. "Why now? Are you ill or dying? What's happened in your life to motivate you to call after all these years?"

Aside from the fact that I had a consolidate of close challenges to my mortality in recent years, nothing admittedly principal had triggered my actions...I just couldn't live with the guilt any longer. For clear reasons Kari, her husband Chris, my two beautiful granddaughters and a estimate of their friends held serious apprehensions about my showing up at this late date. Did I mention it had been 45 years!? So many books, movies and Tv shows tell us of the sinister designs of the "bad penny that turned up." Aside from those fears, what of the likelihood of yet other letdown or heartbreak? Why would anyone risk it? What is the upside? What 47-year-old-woman needs a dad? She already has a stepfather.

My second daughter Kathy was born after my ex and I parted. I never knew her. She is a special person, born with brain damage. She resides in a group home in the South and enjoys a very full life. She and I are writing and I will soon visit her for the first time ever. In all her blissful simplicity, she has said it will "make my day to meet my Daddy." It makes my day to even be called Daddy.

Kari and I have been exchanging visits, cards, letters, postcards, gifts, emails and phone calls for almost two years, now. Were it not for her solid Christian faith and ethic, I doubt we could have gone beyond the initial hashing out of old history. As much as she tried to understand my behavior, I could not help, since I had no viable explanations. How could any person do what I have done? Both Kari and I had to feel a lot of hurt and find ways to deal with it while those early talks. I was walking on eggshells and she was trying to be open and trustful. My God, she showed so much grace through the "tough stuff." If you could meet these astounding people, you would not find it easy to forgive me either. But they did!

I still haven't told you the whole story. For the last 14 years of the estrangement from my daughters, I was a Protestant Minister! Yep, I stood in the pulpit and delivered more than 1,000 sermons on morals, ethics, love, faithfulness and redemption. All the while I was an abandoning, deadbeat dad. I saw God's redemptive love work in a lot of lives while those years but not fully in mine! I was a dishonest, unrepentant hypocrite. I finally had to leave the ministry before lightning struck me right in front of my congregation! Kari told me she fantasized about sitting on the front row in my church some Sunday and replacing the traditional Amen! with a loud, Bull....! I'm sure glad she is above that sort of thing. Whew!

Here's the bottom line...even though unresolved issues tend to grow with time, it is never too late to reconcile! I am an old guy now, but my God and my lovely daughters have all forgiven me because I came clean. No excuses...no alibis... No rationalizations... No conniving... No private motives... Just truth. I blew it!! I fell short of what everyone thinkable, of me, even God.

I am whole for the first time in my adult life. I can look nearby and find no one I have yet to rule up with. I don't hurt anymore. It's never too late to reconcile. The risk of heartbreak is well worth the payout. Now, I'm not naive sufficient to believe every situation is salvageable, but I am admittedly convinced we all owe it to ourselves and to those we have estranged, to give it a try. It'll take guts...
